No, this isn’t about LSU. It is about a manager’s favorite “L” word—Leadership.
I was trying to clear out some old files (why do I collect so much paper???), when I found my notes from the Stanford course I took a few years back on leadership. The class format included Stanford celebrities speaking about leadership in their field. Here are my notes from Tara’s lecture:
Although good leadership on the team correlates well with a winning team, players don’t always like the concept of leadership, and it is often hard to find one player who will step forward and accept a leadership role. When one does (and about 75% are the youngest sibling in the family), her characteristics are:
- Commands the respect of others with her work ethic and knowledge of the game
- Has positive family support and a positive relationship with the coach
- Can give physically and emotionally; is unselfish
- Has the ability to rally others with determination and focus
- Is enthusiastic
- Is not judgmental in accepting others
- Has energy to do the little things
As we enter the NCAA tournament, this “L” word will be important!
