Yes! Stanford beat Tennessee

I had only twice before—in my 23 years of attendance and travel—seen Stanford beat Tennessee.

The last time Stanford won—December 1996—was in Tennessee, and I hadn’t traveled to Knoxville for that game.

Before that, Stanford won in Maples in December 1995. Had I only known it was a victory to savor!

And before that, Stanford won in Maples in December 1991, but I was vacationing in Hawaii and missed that game; it was even difficult to get the final score from across the Pacific. I eventually watched the tape, but that’s a pathetic substitute. (I’m better about scheduling vacations since then!)

The game in 1989; I was there for that easy victory.

The painful games I didn’t miss in person:

  • All the other games in Maples (odd years starting 1989)
  • The overtime game during the Wahine Classic in 1992
  • Three games in Knoxville—1994, 2002, and 2006—these were lopsided and especially grim in person (see orange seats in photo on the right)
  • The NCAA Regionals in Oklahoma in 2004, a heart-breaker

I have suffered; I was so ready for a win.

After the victory Saturday and during Sunday I received several e-mails and phone calls of congratulations (but not from my friend in Knoxville). I feel as excited as if I played on the team myself; I wanted this win.

Yes! Stanford beat the orange this year!

Fun quiz: Who is the single game high scorer in Stanford's history?
Last week's quiz
: What is a Lobo?
Answer: Lobo is the Spanish word for wolf. The New Mexico nickname was chosen in 1920 because the Lobo is respected for his cunning, feared for his prowess, and is the leader of the pack.
